Open-air Museum 7 mills
Temporarily closedAlong a scenic stream, seven historic watermills show how grain was once processed into flour.
Along the picturesque mill stream in Pfarrwerfen, you’ll find a unique open-air museum featuring seven historic watermills. Set along a charming circular trail, these small wooden buildings offer a glimpse into a time when flour had to be produced locally with great effort.
Dating back to the Middle Ages, the mills once played a vital role in everyday life. Known as “Gmachmühlen”, these simple single-room mills were used by local farmers for centuries to grind their grain. Today, they have been carefully preserved and provide insight into traditional milling and rural self-sufficiency. Information panels, original tools and working mechanisms explain how grain was turned into flour and what daily life was like for millers. You’ll also learn about different types of grain, food production and the importance of bread in earlier times.
The museum is not only informative but also interactive: during special events, some of the mills are brought back into operation, allowing visitors to experience the milling process first-hand – a memorable experience for all ages.
