Discover the story of the Noriker horse and learn more about breeding, rural life and regional culture in Niedernsill.

The Noriker Horse Museum in Niedernsill is dedicated to a breed that has shaped Alpine life and culture for centuries. Housed in the carefully restored historic Samerstall, the modern exhibition introduces you to the Noriker not only as a strong working and pack horse, but also as an important part of rural life and regional heritage.

The exhibition explores the origins of the breed, whose name goes back to the Roman province of Noricum, and shows how the Noriker developed into the horse we know today. You’ll find out what makes this breed distinctive, why it played such an important role in agriculture and transport, and how it became deeply connected to life in the mountains. Topics such as breeding, feeding, body language and the change from working animal to leisure horse are presented in a clear and engaging way.

Set within the historic Samerstall in the centre of Niedernsill, the museum combines traditional architecture with a contemporary exhibition and offers fascinating insight into the region’s equestrian and cultural history. The dialect archive housed in the same building adds another dimension by preserving the linguistic and everyday heritage of the Pinzgau and can be visited on request.
