Past Lake Filbling to Fuschl
Perfect for hot summer days: a quiet alpine and forest trail that, after the climb to the Filblingsattel, leads to a romantic cirque lake.
The hidden gem of the little-visited but easy traverse between the two towns of Faistenau and Fuschl is the perfectly circular Filblingsee (1,064 m). Although it’s a modest size at 1.6 hectares, its unique location in a steep, forest-surrounded cirque makes the lake—at least in one’s perception—seem just as significant. Perhaps early cartographers felt the same way; on a map from 1578, “Vilbinsee” (=Filblingsee) is even depicted as larger than Lake Fuschl. The view from the summit of the Filbling (1,307 m) allows for a direct comparison—though it requires a half-hour hike.

Directions
The starting point is the “Tiefbrunnau Karner” stop on Line 157. The trail follows the road back toward Faistenau for a few meters and then branches off to the right toward the former Steinbräu inn. Follow the marked Trail 40 (Filbling) for 300 meters to the first switchback of a farm driveway, then continue straight ahead to a new forest road. Follow this road to the left all the way to the end. Cross the farm driveway once more, then a beautiful stretch through woods and meadows begins, leading to the old—or rather, new—Sattelalm (1,025 m). A few meters above the newly built alpine pasture, the path leads into the forest and reaches the mountain saddle 20 minutes later. The half-hour detour to the summit branches off to the left; the path to the lake continues straight ahead downhill. After passing the lake, the descent soon crosses over onto a forest road—which is very steep in places—and reaches the B 158 after three-quarters of an hour. The bus stop for Line 150, Fuschl Oberbrunn, is located 200 m further on to the right.
