Around Lake Zell

The picturesque lake is naturally the focus of the hike, but there are quite extraordinary places to discover on its shores.

The lake, which is almost 5 km² in size, located in the middle of the Pinzgau mountain landscape, has a strong attraction for walkers, pleasure seekers, celebrities, and birdlife. During the roughly three-hour circuit, benches invite you to sunbathe, numerous information boards highlight special features, and those who prefer to return by boat also have the opportunity. A very special place is held by the themed trail “guest book” in the Thumersbach district, which puts the most prominent visitors in the spotlight. These include: the imperial couple Franz-Joseph and Elisabeth, the world-famous poets Stefan Zweig (“The Royal Game”) or H. D. Lawrence (“Lady Chatterley’s Lover”), the family of Baron Ritter Georg von Trapp (Sound of Music), as well as the Dutch royal family who vacationed at Lake Zell from 1937 onwards. So keep your eyes open, there is much to experience.

Directions

From Zell am See station, it is only a few steps to the lake promenade. Turning left, the path passes the bath and the boat dock to the northern bay and continues to follow the shoreline. For a 1 km stretch, the route follows the road to Thumersbach; after crossing the stream, it briefly goes into a ditch to the left, then to the right (Path 90 Erlhof) uphill. Here begins the great themed trail "guestbook", which surprises at the highest point with very cozy loungers and a truly imperial view of the Schmittenhöhe. Returning to lake level, the path passes the Erlhof of the Trapp family, turns right at the beach, and crosses the bird sanctuary to the Gransiedlung. Between the houses, the path joins the lake promenade again and shortly thereafter reaches the starting point at the train station.
