Temporarily closedCIRCULAR HIKE BETWEEN SUMMIT CROSS AND CAVE EXPLORATION
Even if the summer sun is shining outside: Those who have chosen the Schellenberger Ice Cave at the Untersberg as a day trip destination are well advised to have a few warm clothes in their rucksack. Please note that entry to the ice cave is only possible as part of a guided circular tour. Before descending into the icy depths of Germany’s largest developed ice show cave, our path first leads steeply upwards. Our route begins at the mountain station of the Untersberg cable car, leads over a high path to the Geiereck, to the Salzburg Hochthron and finally over the wooden stairs and a rocky tunnel of the Thomas-Eder-Steig to the cave. Sure-footedness, a head for heights and fitness are essential. The well-deserved snack before the descent is then served to you in the Toni Lenz hut. The 1,853-meter-high Untersberg is the scene of countless legends and myths. The legendary Emperor Charlemagne is said to be waiting here for his return in the company of the dwarf-like “Untersberger Mandln”. There are said to be time holes here and the “Wild Hunt” is said to run amok around the mountain.
