Beautiful days and silent nights in Oberndorf
SONGS AND BRIDGES CONNECT NATIONS
With every kilometre, the cozy Christmas spirit rises. It is a very special place, best approached by rail. In St. Nicholas Church in Oberndorf, the moving song “Silent Night! Holy Night!” was first performed in 1818 by assistant priest Joseph Mohr – on a guitar because the old positive organ, a small portable church organ, was probably not playable at that time. Village teacher and organist Franz Xaver Gruber had composed the melody shortly before Christmas Eve. Where the old church once stood, you are now welcomed by a simple little prayer house, the Silent Night Chapel. Those who want to delve deeper into the history of the song can visit the museum in the old rectory and learn about Salzach shipping and its connection with the song. And, of course, a visit to the Silent Night special post office should not be missed on your trip. Here, your loving Christmas mail to those at home is franked with a Silent Night special stamp and marked with a special postmark.
