Between Neumarkt and Köstendorf

AN IDEAL, ALL-WEATHER DISCOVERY ROUTE FOR THE TRANSITION PERIOD OFF THE BEATEN PATHS.

Some orientation skills are required on the unfortunately very sparsely marked paths between Neumarkt and Köstendorf. But the route also leads to extraordinary places that radiate a very special atmosphere in their silence. This includes the hidden branch church St. Johann am Berg. From a distance, for a long time, only the baroque onion dome tower is visible, cheekily peeking above the foliage of the small wood. In former times, the seclusion was desired because, during the devastating plague wave in 1714, a cemetery for the plague victims of the area was established here. Nothing of that is noticeable anymore, not even of the burned-down sexton’s house beside the church. Another special place is the herb garden in front of the parish church in Köstendorf. The famous writer Carl Zuckmayer (1896–1977), who lived in Henndorf for some years, has given it a literary monument with the novel “Der Seelenbräu.” Impressive places to marvel at are also the bird-rich wet meadows around the Wallerbach and, of course, the towns Köstendorf and Neumarkt with their museums worth seeing.

Directions

The starting point is the Neumarkt am Wallersee station. From there, go through the new railway underpass towards Köstendorf and then turn left for 400 meters along the noise barrier to the old railway underpass. At this point, at a sharp angle, the unfortunately unmarked pilgrimage route “Via Nova” branches off to the right into the forest. Through the forest and across a clearing, we reach the church St. Johann am Berg. If the grass is too high, please bypass the meadow on the left side. From the picturesque church, we follow the pilgrimage path to the right and then, just before the sign “Gramling,” branch off half-left towards Köstendorf. A landmark is the pointed church tower; the path leads past the local history museum. From the church, a few steps lead down into the town center and from there uphill again to the country road. The yellow signpost opposite, at the beginning of Notar-Vogl-Straße, offers a brief orientation aid. The route runs to the railway embankment, crosses the Western railway line, and then continues left towards “Hirschleiten.” A short variant branches off at the next farm to the left, meets a railway overpass after 2 km, and reaches Neumarkt station after another kilometer. A route longer by three quarters of an hour leads after the farm first to the right along the street, then left, and from the last farm as a field path over the Wallerbach. Slightly uphill, the path branches off left at the next two forks. Back at the Wallerbach, the last section runs along the bank towards Neumarkt. The church tower is again a good orientation point for a visit to the slightly elevated town center, but the path to the station follows the stream course to the branch to Wallbachstraße on the left.
