Devotion in Maria Plain near Bergheim

OVER THE CALVARY HILL TO THE PILGRIMAGE BASILICA

For those seeking tranquility and silence, a trip to Maria Plain is unparalleled in the Salzburg region. The hike up the 560-meter-high Plainberg starts at the Plainbrücke in the Itzling district. Stone Stations of the Cross from the Baroque period line the Way of the Cross up to the group of trees Maria Plain, designated as a natural monument. Here, on an open meadow, begins the Calvary Hill built in the 17th century. The gravel path leads over stairs past four chapels with life-sized depictions of the Passion of Christ to the crucifixion group. The Baroque minor basilica Maria Plain is one of the most visited pilgrimage churches in Central Europe. It houses valuable works by well-known artists such as Kremser Schmidt, Franz de Neve, Thomas Schwanthaler, and Christoph Lederwasch. The image of grace Maria Trost by an unknown painter attracted pilgrims due to answered prayers. The persistent rumor that Mozart composed his famous Coronation Mass for this place continues. It is still regularly performed here: every year the mass sounds on the fifth and sixth Sundays after Pentecost in Maria Plain. Entrance is free. Hearty food for pilgrims is available at the snack station or the Maria Plain guesthouse.
