From St. Gilgen over the Almkogel towards Fuschl

Surrounded by the most beautiful Salzkammergut lakes, the Almkogel rises, which is highly recommended for an attractive crossing.

The starting point in St. Gilgen and the destination Almkogel (1030 m) are usually quite frequented, but the paths in between lead through an almost untouched, breathtakingly beautiful Salzkammergut landscape. The Erbhof Obenau nestles like a small kingdom in the well-protected high plateau at the foot of the Plombergstein. Then follows a beautiful mixed forest, to which the Almkogel viewpoint is attached. Only the last 50 vertical meters to the rocky limestone peak are slightly alpine, but then an exclusive lake view opens up to the three Salzkammergut pearls Mondsee, Attersee and Irrsee. Most of the elevation gain is done, the descent to the Kleiner Kapelle at the B-158 follows comfortable forest roads and an excellently passable path.

Directions

From the bus terminal in St. Gilgen, the path runs under the Zwölferhorn cable car, then branches off to the right to Mozartplatz in the town center and follows there, opposite the town hall, Steinklüftestraße (path 14 Obenau, Almkogel) uphill to the B 154. This is crossed, then the route, with shortcut variants, leads 1 km along the access road to the Hof Obenau. A farm road runs to the end of the high valley-like plain and branches off to the left into the forest there. Now the ascent quickly gains height, leads after 1.5 km into a forest road and shortly after branches off to the right to reach the narrow summit within a few minutes. The descent leads back to this fork, then initially follows the forest road to the right towards “Fuschl, Eibensee,” until after 1.5 km the path to the “Kleiner Kapelle” branches off to the left. This variant begins still on a forest road, soon turning into a path which after half an hour meets the chapel on the B 158. The St. Gilgen Pöllach stop lies 500 m slightly uphill on the right-hand side.
