High above Fuschl: Frauenkopf and Schober

Airy double rock summit between Mondsee and Fuschlsee

For those sure-footed and without fear of heights, the absolute pleasure route in the Salzkammergut. First over golf meadows in Fuschl, then through the forest, increasingly steep through scree fields to the exposed and partly secured summit area of Frauenkopf. From there you have a fantastic view of Fuschlsee, the Osterhorn group, and Wolfgangsee all the way to the Dachstein glacier. After 10 minutes and slight climbing, you reach Schober, from where you can see Mondsee, Drachenwand, and Irrsee. From there it goes steeply down on already very rugged rock secured with a steel cable in the summit area to the medieval Wartenfels castle ruins. The detour to the castle is worthwhile, for example, to watch a sunset. Then back to Fuschl. Not recommended when wet.

Directions

When you get off the bus, you already have the Schober summit in view. Follow Kirchenstraße towards the town and turn left into Dorfstraße. After 200 m turn right into Seestraße and walk past the public beach. After 400 m, turn right off the main road onto a gravel path. Frauenkopf and Schober summits are already signposted. It now goes uphill through a forest and a golf course. At the end of the golf course before the forest, take the path to the left. 150 m after the clearing, choose a steep unmarked path going up to the right. This leads to a larger path, continue uphill to the right. The path crosses a forest road, follow the sign "difficult, only for experienced hikers" there. Due to the steepness, you quickly gain height and go through scree fields (beware of falling stones from hikers above) until you reach the summit area. With stairs and steel cables made safer, you reach the exposed Frauenkopf summit. From there, continue in 10 min to the Schober summit. The descent starts steeply secured with a steel cable towards the Wartenfels ruin. There, go down left to Forsthaus Wartenfels. Now left along the forest path back to Fuschl.
