Hintersee and Ice Chapel
ICE AGE IN THE MIDDLE OF SUMMER: THE HIKE FROM THE IDYLLIC HINTERSEE TO THE ICE CHAPEL UNDER THE WIESERHÖRNDL CONNECTS TWO EXTREMELY DIFFERENT POINTS.
The children will be thrilled: first a water fight in Hintersee, then a snowball fight at the ice chapel. How powerful the so-called ice chapel really is now in the valley floor under the steep northern flanks of the Wieserhörndl (1,567 m) naturally depends very much on the avalanche snow from the past winter and the temperature trend of the current summer. There are years when the compacted, hard-pressed snow lasts until the beginning of the next winter season – thereby fulfilling the criteria for the birth of a mini-glacier. However, the chances of a new ice age are not very high in view of global warming. Instead, we are almost certainly rewarded with another, annually recurring greeting from the far north: in early summer, thousands of brightly blue Siberian irises emerge in an easily accessible wet meadow on the northern shore of the Hintersee.

Directions
The starting point is the Hintersee Tauglbrücke stop. The route follows the country road another 200 m downstream and immediately after the bridge first turns right and shortly after takes the marked path to the left. The meadow path leads to a beautiful rest area at the southern tip of Hintersee and at the next fork turns left onto the wide service road. After 800 m, a marked Nordic walking trail branches off to the right, along which the route follows the Grießbach for 1.5 km to the impressive valley end. The bizarrely hollowed-out, differently sized snow cones must not be entered due to the danger of collapse. The path returns to the fork before the lake but now continues straight ahead and subsequently circles the Hintersee. Highlights here are the blue iris meadow in early summer, the two refreshment stops Asis Seestüberl and the snack buffet Hirschpoint throughout summer, and of course the dreamy bays along the shore all year round. The lake circuit is pram-friendly.
