Meeting point Kleinarler Hut

The sledders, the winter hikers, the ski tourers, and the snowshoers. They all find ideal conditions around the Kleinarler Hut.

Away from the ski slopes, there are not many winter-operated huts in the state of Salzburg. The Kleinarler Hut at the foot of the Penkkopf, just over 2000 meters high, is not only one of the coziest stopping points, but it also appeals to a particularly broad audience. A good reason for this is a perfectly groomed natural sledding run that is neither too steep, nor too flat, nor icy. At the end of the six-and-a-half-kilometer-long run stands the romantic Kleinarler Hut (1756 m) as if painted in. For ski tourers, the ascent does not have to end here. For them, there is an extra treat with the nearby Penkkopf (2011 m) and its fabulous northeast slopes covered in fresh powder. From the sunny terrace of the Kleinarler Hut, they can admire their tracks in the powder snow while enjoying a hot drink.

Directions

The starting point is the Kleinarl Schule stop. A few meters further downstream, Ployergasse branches off to the right. We follow this access road (Hirschleiten farm road) for half an hour or 200 meters in height to the visitor parking lot (1200 m). There begins the natural sledding run; ski tourers can soon choose a faster track that takes the direct ascent. When the “hope larch” appears to the right of the path after a total of two hours, it is a good sign because the Kleinarler Hut is only a few breaths away. While the sledders have reached their destination, ski tourers can still follow the broad, initially moderately steep track westwards towards Penkkopf. The track soon turns right (NW) and leads over smaller steep sections to a large cirque, which is closed off by the pyramid-shaped Penkkopf. Depending on snow quality and avalanche report, the descent can be along different routes of the ascent or, with little snow, remain on the prepared sledding run from the Kleinarler Hut.
