Plombergstein on the gentle route
THE PLOMBERGSTEIN (830 M) IS IMPRESSIVE LESS FOR ITS HEIGHT AND MORE FOR ITS FORTRESS-LIKE APPEARANCE. BESIDES CLIMBING ROUTES OF ALL DIFFICULTY LEVELS, THERE IS ALSO A GENTLE ASCENT.
Already from the bus station in St. Gilgen, the Plombergstein impresses with its massive presence. The path to the steep rock walls is long but passes quickly thanks to its enchanting variety. At the start, the path follows along Wolfgangsee, the largest and at 113 meters also the deepest lake in Salzburg, then follows a romantic forest section before the highlight and highest point of the circular hike, the rugged Plombergstein, appears. However, those not interested in “Hexenkuchl” and “Teufelsschlucht” or even climbing routes can easily return to St. Gilgen on the direct service road.Â

Directions
From the bus station, go past the new Zwölferhorn cable car and then turn right over the Poststraße to the central square in front of the church. Now, the shore path 19 towards Fürberg is signed, which we follow on the left past the beach bath and yacht club for over 1.5 kilometers to the idyllic Brunnwinkl bay. Just before, the hiking route branches off with the Salzkammergut bike path to the left, but then crosses the B 154 and now follows path 18 towards Buchberg-Obenau. At the last, beautifully located farm, the path turns left and crosses over 1.5 kilometers the south side of the wooded Buchberg to a farm entrance. From here, go left downhill for 10 minutes to the Plombergstein fork. A fast option back to St. Gilgen follows the service road, but the spectacular route continues on the right first at the base and then ascending steeply to the highest point Plombergstein (830 m). Back at a fork, go down many steps to the left into the "Staffelgraben", then on the Pöllach driveway to the B 158 and along this to the left to the next bus stop Mozartblick or further into the village of St. Gilgen.            Â
