ON THE HISTORY PATH „THEN & NOW“ THROUGH 1,200 YEARS OF CITY HISTORY

Isn’t it amazing how a place can change over the years? Tamsweg, the district capital of Salzburg’s Lungau region, invites its visitors on a very vivid journey into its own past. On the history path “Tamsweg – Then & Now,” photo panels allow a direct comparison between then and now. On the 4.3-kilometer circular route, 45 venerable buildings tell their eventful history in words and pictures.

Even beyond the history path, there is much to discover in Tamsweg. The town is known for its hospitality. Around the historic market and in the surrounding alleys, a dozen inns await thirsty visitors. If you wish, you can follow in the footsteps of the pilgrims who, in the Middle Ages, made Tamsweg a pilgrimage site known far beyond Austria. Their destination, the listed pilgrimage church “St. Leonhard ob Tamsweg,” is located on a hill south of the town. According to legend, in 1421 a statue of Saint Leonhard repeatedly “escaped” from a locked chest in the pilgrimage church and reappeared on Schwarzenberg. It was decided to leave it there and first a chapel and later a church were built around it. The small wooden carving and the juniper branch on which it was once found can still be seen in the church today.
