The Helenenweg in Mondsee

FROM THE BASILICA MONDSEE THROUGH THE ROMANTIC HELENENTAL TO THE MAGNIFICENT VIEWPOINT LEIDINGERHOF.

The Upper Austrian town of Mondsee on the lake of the same name can look back on a long history. Although it was less influenced by the nearby archbishopric of Salzburg, there are still numerous connections to the once-powerful neighbor. One of these is bus 140, with which passengers can travel quickly and comfortably from Salzburg main station to the Mondsee bus terminal. Salzburg climate tickets are also valid up to the final stop Mondsee. Before the delightful hike to the Erlach mill begins, a stroll through the town is recommended. Best first to the lake promenade, then in a few minutes up to the unmistakable pilgrimage church Maria Hilf and, of course, further to the magnificent basilica where it all began. The monastery founding dates back to Duke Odilo of Bavaria in 748; until the 12th century, Mondsee was an independent monastery of Regensburg, in 1506 the Mondsee region came to Austria, and in 1791 the monastery was abolished under Emperor Leopold. Monastery and collegiate church were richly furnished; the precious baroque altars by Meinrad Guggenbichler and Hans Waldburger rank among the most beautiful of their kind. A very different charm on our tour is conveyed a little later on the Zeller Ache by the colorful, slightly run-down buildings of an ancient scythe factory. In 1897, 138,000 scythes were still produced here; today talented artists forge their razor-sharp works in the rooms. Along the route, many surprises await, such as the exact explanation of a bridge bearing under the mighty Zeller Ache bridge. Culinary delights are also not neglected: either in the cozy Erlach mill or at the panorama guesthouse Leidingerhof at the highest point of the route, or perhaps in the legendary good cafes in the town center.

Directions

The starting point is the bus terminal (final stop of line 140) in Mondsee. Along Franz-Kreutzberger-Straße towards the lake. On the right is the interesting transport and Ischler railway museum, but the route passes the original playground to the lake promenade and follows it to the left. The monument of Countess Almeida points to the owner of the lake; a little later the path meets the federal road, follows it 100 meters to the right, then turns left into Dr.-Lechner-Weg and again 100 meters later to the right into the ascent to Maria Hilf Church. Along Hilfbergstraße, it goes down to the former collegiate church, then across the visually striking "wavy" forecourt to the left to Rainerstraße, and on the right-hand side of this street to the cemetery. Now the Helenenweg (trail 7) signposting begins. Along the Zeller Ache, the atmospheric path leads past the old scythe factory, a wayside cross placed in the middle of the brook, and the bridge bearing to the Erlach mill. At the chapel, the route turns left and a little later right over the meadow path to the access road to the guesthouse Leidingerhof. Either 15 minutes walking uphill to this excellent viewpoint, or immediately left first with trail 7 and after the motorway underpass with trail 35 to Mondsee to the junction Franz-Kreutzberger-Straße (bus terminal) to the right.
