The Triftsteig Trail in the Saalach valley near Lofer
An easily accessible and family-friendly hike; experience the sensational nature in the Pinzgau Saalachtal!
Located near the market town of Lofer and easily accessible by public transport, this easy hike opens up access to an impressive and tranquil natural setting after just a few minutes.
The Triftsteig, the highlight of this route, leads downstream along the Saalach River. Visitors experience a varied trail via small wooden footbridges, well-maintained gravel paths, and numerous viewpoints. The tour is accompanied by the Loferer Steinberge mountains and the Chiemgau Alps to the north, which offer ever-changing perspectives. Combined with the constantly shifting flora, this creates many “wow” moments.
Numerous benches along the way invite you to linger and enjoy nature. If needed, you can cool off in calmer sections of the Saalach; swimming is permitted while observing the applicable regulations.
The hike is generally family-friendly. However, due to the lack of railings on some narrower sections of the path, it is only recommended for families with small children to a limited extent. The return route leads upstream, slightly offset from the Saalach River, through an idyllic and considerably quieter forest. Clearings open up repeatedly, offering views of expansive, lush green meadows against an impressive mountain backdrop. A truly atmospheric end to this diverse tour.
Also of interest: The route passes the so-called Devil’s Footbridge right at the beginning. First documented in 1896, it has only recently been closed due to erosion of the Devil’s Rock. The local council is working on a solution.

Directions
The tour starts at the Lofer Middle School/Tourist Information Center bus stop. From here, the path leads towards the town center: Passing the parish church, you reach the market square, where you turn right towards the main road. A pedestrian crossing allows for safe crossing; afterwards, follow the signs for the Triftsteig trail. The Triftsteig runs along the Saalach River to the Au Bridge near the Wildwasser Marina. After crossing the bridge, a small path behind the parking lot leads directly into the forest. Here, you'll encounter only a few meters of elevation gain before the path descends gently and steadily back towards Lofer. After leaving the forest, follow the path upstream through Scheffsnoth. Cross the Saalach River via the Hubertussteg footbridge. Passing the Hotel St. Hubertus, the path leads straight ahead back to the starting point at the bus stop.... Those who only wish to hike the Triftsteig trail can begin their return journey to Salzburg Central Station (lines 180 or 260) at the nearby Lofer Antonikapelle bus stop after reaching the Au Bridge.
