Two poets in Wagrain

JOSEPH MOHR AND K. H. WAGGERL

“And it came to pass…” thus begins the famous story “about what made the Christ Child smile” by the Austrian writer Karl Heinrich Waggerl from 1953. Waggerl left behind many books and stories after he had to give up his teaching career for health reasons. The Waggerl Museum also serves as the Christ Child post office during the Christmas season. On a cultural walk through Wagrain, you follow in the footsteps of Joseph Mohr and Karl Heinrich Waggerl. The Joseph Mohr elementary school and Wagrain parish church recall the vicar’s social work. The graves of Karl Heinrich Waggerl and Joseph Mohr are located in the Wagrain cemetery. The “Pflegerschlöss’l”, an architectural gem with a charming little garden, is the new Silent Night museum. It is an essential part of the Wagrain cultural walk. In the Schlöss’l, visitors learn more about the song “Silent Night! Holy Night!” which is sung worldwide in over 300 languages and dialects.
