From Lake Böndl to Lake Goldegger

A wonderfully varied trail connects the two moor lakes on the sunny Goldegg plateau.

It is quite surprising that there are two such inviting swimming lakes on the high terrace above the Salzach Valley at just under 1,000 meters above sea level. The dark color is caused by humic acid, which the physician and natural philosopher Paracelsus (1493–1541) already considered to be particularly healing. Another positive side effect of these not-too-deep peat lakes is that the water temperatures are usually very pleasant. The respective bathing facilities provide the necessary infrastructure. But even without taking a dip, the hike is a true pleasure with a high wellness factor. You can choose between routes that are rarely frequented and suitable for strollers (Trail 2) or romantic forest and meadow paths (Trail 2A).

Directions

The starting point is the last stop on Line 580 (Goldegg Böndlsee). Route 2 (“Großer Buchbergrundweg”) initially follows the road toward Lend for 1 km, but then branches off to the left before the narrow connecting road descends steeply—in a rather adventurous manner—into the Salzach Valley. After 1 km, the route—which offers great views and is sunny—reaches another fork: the slightly shorter but more heavily paved Route 2 to Goldegg stays on the access road, while the meadow and forest variant (“Kleine Buchbergrunde”) branches off to the left toward the Moosbauer farmstead and crosses the varied terrain on narrow trails. After passing through an enchanting forest with ancient maple trees, Route 2A toward Goldegg continues on paved paths from Großrohrerbauer and joins Route 2 at the Altenhof Chapel. Turning left, the route continues for another half hour on sidewalks along the road before reaching the lake, the swimming area, the castle, and the bus stop in front of the castle parking lot.
