Fortress Hohenwerfen
Temporarily closedDiscover Hohenwerfen Castle high above the Salzach Valley and explore more than 900 years of history – with fascinating exhibitions and impressive bird of prey flight shows.
Perched dramatically on a rocky peak high above the Salzach Valley near Werfen, Hohenwerfen Castle is one of the most striking fortresses in SalzburgerLand. For more than 900 years it has watched over the valley and tells the story of a fascinating and eventful past.
The castle was built in 1077 under Archbishop Gebhard as a strategic fortress to protect the Salzburg archbishopric. Over the centuries it was expanded several times and served various roles – including as a prison, administrative centre and later as a hunting lodge. After periods of decline, the castle was carefully restored in the 19th century and today stands as one of Austria’s most impressive historic landmarks.
During your visit you can explore the historic rooms on a guided tour and learn about life in the Middle Ages. A true highlight are the spectacular bird of prey demonstrations, where eagles, falcons and vultures show their impressive flying skills while falconers explain the centuries-old art of falconry.
Additional exhibitions, including the Falconry Museum and interactive displays about the castle’s history, add to the experience. Surrounded by the mountains of the Tennengebirge and Hagengebirge, Hohenwerfen Castle is a memorable excursion for visitors of all ages.
