Hermitage Saalfelden
Temporarily closedPerched above Saalfelden, this unique hermitage is one of the last inhabited rock hermitages in Europe.
Perched high above the Saalfelden basin, the hermitage is nestled into the rock face of the Steinernes Meer. The small white chapel, visible from afar, is one of the last inhabited hermitages in Europe and has attracted visitors since the 17th century.
The walk up is part of the experience, leading through peaceful forest paths. Whether you start from Bachwinkl or take the steeper Fuchssteig, the reward at the top is a wide panoramic view over Saalfelden and the surrounding mountains. What makes this place truly special is its atmosphere. Some visitors come for the quiet and reflection, while others appreciate the opportunity to speak with the hermit who lives here. The hermitage is therefore not only a historic site, but also a place of encounter and contemplation.
Nearby, you’ll also find the “Kuhloch”, a natural cave with traces dating back to the Bronze Age, adding another historical layer to this remarkable location.
