From Bergheim around the Plainberg

IN THE CENTER OF THE CIRCULAR ROUTE IS THE FAMOUS PILGRIMAGE BASILICA MARIA PLAIN. BUT THERE IS MUCH TO DISCOVER AT THE FOOT OF THE PLAINBERG AS WELL.

The meeting place Maria Plain, so masterfully staged by the Italian Baroque architect Dario 350 years ago, is truly excellently chosen. The pilgrimage basilica can be seen from all sides and always makes an optimal impression. The advantages of the Plainberg were already known to the Roman estate owners who built magnificent country villas on the sunny slopes of the gentle elevation. Our route goes one floor lower. At the very bottom of the valley floor flows the Fischach, which, after some widenings and renaturations, has developed into a small river jewel. Original rest and playgrounds have been created, and a family of beavers obviously have great joy at the Fischach as well. After the quiet start, it gradually moves over to the more frequented southwest side with the unique view of the city of Salzburg and the mountains.

Directions

The starting point is the Bergheim train station (train S 1). Through the underpass, it goes to the central town square and then through another underpass to the parking lot in front of the school. Users of bus line 21 from the Bergheim Ortsmitte stop also reach here within a few steps. A large map at the parking lot shows the hiking routes. Fortunately, route 61 only follows the disturbingly loud B 156 for a short section and then turns off after 400 meters to the bank of the Fischach. This is followed by two wonderfully varied kilometers on the comfortable riverside path before route 61 then branches right first, then left in Lengfelden and runs past the Bräuwirt to the Mattseer Landesstraße. A short variant to Maria Plain leads directly to the right, but the route that first goes straight slightly uphill along Tennweg and then in a wide right loop to Kasern is much more attractive. At the first, unfortunately unmarked fork in Kasern, we stay left, then the marking resumes. In front of the “Jägerwirt,” the path goes through the underpass, then uphill into the district Radeck and finally across the deciduous forest to the guesthouse Plainlinde. It is only 15 minutes up over the Calvary Hill to the basilica, and from there another 15 minutes down to the starting point Bergheim. Even shorter is the direct route 60, which crosses straight at the foot of the Plainberg to Bergheim.
