Grabensee circular tour near Zellhof
This relaxed hike leads through forests, meadows and lakeshores to the most beautiful views of the Trumer Lakes.
Lake Grabensee in northern Salzburg is the smallest of the three Trumer Lakes. It was formed around 18,000 years ago by the melting of the Mattsee Glacier. At approximately two kilometers long and surrounded by tranquil forests, fields, and hamlets, it’s ideal for a hike around its perimeter.
This relatively flat trail leads over small hills that offer glimpses of the entire lake district, including beautiful views of Lake Mattsee and Lake Obertrum.
Along the Grabensee circular trail, in addition to the calming natural surroundings, you’ll find information panels explaining the geographical origins and context of the landscape. Several rest areas invite you to take a break. In summer, it’s worth bringing your swimsuit, as there’s a small lido in Perwang, about halfway around the trail. This is also the only public access point to Lake Grabensee.

Starting from the Mattsee Zellhof bus stop, cross the road and head into the fields, passing Zellhof, following the green signs for the Grabensee circular trail (number 18). At the edge of the forest, you'll pass a barrier. Shortly after, keep left at the fork in the path. The forest trail gradually leads closer to the shore. After leaving the forest, a small wooden bridge crosses the Mattig River. You'll then reach the north shore and take a short detour through the hamlet of Rödhausen. From there, the route continues through fields and past cow pastures. Passing the lido in Perwang, you'll eventually return to the south shore and the starting point of the hike. The excellent infrastructure around the lake allows you to end the route earlier, if needed, at either Gransdorf or Fraham, and catch a bus to Salzburg.

By public transport
- From Salzburg Central Station, take bus line 121 (Monday to Friday) to the Mattsee Zellhof bus stop. If you're hiking on a weekend, take bus line 121 to Mattsee Überfuhr; from there it's about a 10-minute walk to Mattsee Zellhof.
- Return via the same route, i.e., bus line 121 or 120 towards Salzburg Central Station.
