From St. Gilgen via Kühleiten to Fuschl

Hopping from the glamorous Wolfgangsee to the idyllic Fuschlsee.

Lake Wolfgang is the largest and, at 113 meters, also the deepest lake in the state of Salzburg. It is the diva among Salzburg’s many magnificent lakes; the mere mention of its name was enough to fill movie theaters and operetta houses. Luxurious villas in the Salzkammergut style were built around the lake, and the haute volée gathered between St. Gilgen, Strobl, and St. Wolfgang. The 2.6 km² Fuschlsee is quite different. It was one of the specially protected “court kitchen lakes,” whose fish catch was reserved almost entirely for the prince-archbishop’s kitchen. This sense of unspoiled tranquility is still palpable to this day. Nevertheless, the lakeside promenade in Fuschl is a lively spot for enjoyable visits to outdoor dining areas. And there’s even a small boat dock there. The destination of the quiet Fuschlsee rowboats: the castle fishery on the opposite shore!

Directions

The starting point is the bus station in St. Gilgen. Passing under the No. 12 Horn Cable Car, the trail runs briefly along the B 158 and then branches off to the left onto Hochreitstraße, following the sign for Kühleiten (Trail 854). Passing by elegant Salzkammergut villas and a farm with rare breeds of livestock, the route winds through the beautiful hillside forest. Now begins a steep section gaining 250 meters in elevation, followed by a sunny plateau surrounding the Kühleiten farm. Near the highest point, hikers can help themselves to refreshments from a beverage box. We follow Trail 28 toward Fuschl, which crosses a forest road, climbs a few more meters in elevation, and then branches off to the left, passing the idyllically situated Landhotel Hochlackenhof and continuing along the access road. The short detour via the romantic Rumingmühle mill is well worth it, before reaching the Fuschl Ortsmitte bus stop across from the church 30 minutes later.
