Around the Ritzensee in Saalfelden
A varied walk through the town of Saalfelden to the Ritzensee, which has only existed in this form since 1954.
Art can do a lot, but that a romantic watercolor painting would result in a new lake is certainly extraordinary. The Saalfelden artist and teacher Oswald Putzer (1912 – 1983) painted his “Dream of the Ritzensee” in 1953, in which he depicted the marshy meadow in front of Schloss Ritzen as a respectable lake. A year later, the vision became reality with the help of a dam, and since then the “art lake” delights its visitors in summer as well as in winter. A visit to the nearby local history museum Schloss Ritzen, just a few meters away, would be quite obvious. In front of the entrance, the oversized Celtic Biberg stag points to a highlight from the nearby Biberg. Another highlight in the museum is the nativity scene exhibition, dedicated to the famous Saalfelden nativity scene builder Alexander “Xandi” Schläffer (1899 – 1984).

The pedestrian crossing that leads from Saalfelden station to the other side of the street ends exactly at the footpath, which passes by the school complex and meets the Urslau river a few minutes later. After the bridge, turning right, the route continues 800 m on the riverside path and then, after the underpass, switches to the other side of the river. Shortly afterwards, the steep stairs path 26 (Ritzensee), which is not cleared in winter, branches off to the right. This section can also be bypassed straight ahead via Achenweg and Ritzensee street leading off to the right. Passing by the local history museum Schloss Ritzen, the route follows the signage "Seerundgang" through the Schmalenbergham district and leads in magnificent panoramic location around the lake. Returning to Schloss Ritzen, the return route to the station follows the already known path. Or return from the Schloss Ritzen stop by bus 61 and bus 690.
